At ppb levels, minor contamination can dominate the result.
Sodium · Navigator ASO500
Online sodium is one of the most sensitive indicators of contamination in high-purity water. At ppb levels, sample-line quality matters as much as the analyser.

ASO500 Sodium
Continuous ISE measurement with automatic two-point calibration and electrode regeneration. The architecture separates the wet section from the Navigator 540 transmitter.
Practical guidance
- demineralisation plants and ion-exchanger leakage
- condensate and steam cycles
- high-purity applications requiring ppb sensitivity
- multiple sampling points with similar chemistry
- sample lines contaminated by handling or salts
- materials or fittings that release sodium
- unstable flow
- contaminated calibration solutions or reagents
Installation and maintenance
The wet section stabilises flow and pressure: supply it with a properly conditioned sample.
The method adds alkaline vapour to establish suitable conditions for ISE measurement.
Do not disable regeneration without justification: it maintains sensitivity at low concentrations.
Long lines delay detection of condenser leaks or ion-exchange breakthrough.
Useful for checking other points while keeping an auditable record of the manual measurement.
SWAS/SCS integration
For high-pressure or high-temperature sampling points, we can integrate sample conditioning, cooling, pressure reduction, flow control and the analyser on the same panel.

Automatic regeneration
ABB automatically regenerates the sodium electrode to prevent loss of sensitivity at trace levels.
Multi-stream
Up to three streams per wet section; several wet sections can be connected to the transmitter.
No moving parts
The wet section is designed to reduce maintenance and reagent consumption.
SWAS
This measurement is particularly sensitive to tubing, cooling, pressure reduction and drain quality.

Frequently asked questions
Are ASO500 and ASO550 the same thing?
ASO500 is the family/analyser name on the ABB website; the current architecture uses a Navigator 550 wet section and Navigator 540 transmitter in the model codes and documentation.
What is the sodium measuring range?
ABB specifies 0.01–10.000 ppb with 0.001 ppb resolution.
Why does the sodium electrode need regeneration?
At very low concentrations, the ISE can lose sensitivity. Navigator 500 automates regeneration to restore its response.
How many streams can it handle?
A multi-stream sodium wet section can measure up to 3 samples; the transmitter can handle several wet sections, depending on configuration.
Where is sodium measured in power applications?
In demineralisation, condensate and the steam/water cycle, as a highly sensitive indicator of contamination and ion-exchange leakage.
