FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a controller and a recorder?

A controller closes a loop and adjusts an output to maintain the process at its setpoint. A recorder acquires and stores data. Some Commander instruments combine both functions.

When should I use a standalone controller instead of a PLC or DCS?

For one or a few local loops, a simple operator interface, independence from the central system or retrofits without PLC/DCS changes.

Is CM15 a controller?

No. CM15 is a universal indicator with totalisation, alarms, maths, logic and communications, rather than part of the CM10/30/50 PID controller family.

Is C1900 obsolete?

No. ABB continues to list C1900, C1300, C1950 and C1960 in its circular-chart recorder portfolio.
