Magnetic level gauges

ABB magnetic level indicators

Continuous local indication without pressurised glass or electrical power. The bypass chamber follows the vessel level, and the float magnetically operates the external indicator.

ABB KM26
Flagship / severe service

KM26

The ABB/K-TEK platform for demanding oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical and power applications. Built to the specified materials, pressure/temperature, density and connections.

When to use it / when to consider alternatives

Magnetic level gauges: practical guidance

A good choice when
  • local indication is required without power
  • the process is toxic, corrosive or at high pressure/temperature
  • you want to add an external transmitter and switches
  • total level or interface measurement is required
Check carefully when
  • the product may crystallise or form deposits
  • density changes significantly with the process
  • solids or slurry may jam the float
  • the chamber equalises slowly
Float sized for actual density

Size for actual density, pressure and temperature, particularly for interface measurement.

Vent / drain / isolation

Provide valves and drainage for commissioning and maintenance.

Vertical alignment

The chamber must be vertical and connected to the vessel so that it follows the actual level.

Insulation / tracing

Design these without obstructing reading or maintenance.

Vessel connections

Position and diameter influence equalisation and deposits.

Redundancy

KM26 with LMT200 and switches, or MW05, separates indication, transmission and alarms.

ABB datasheets and manuals

Download the documents for your model. Shared manuals, protocols and versions are identified in each document card.

MW05 MagWave

Dual-chamber system datasheet, shared mechanical manual and MW05 configuration guide. The associated radar requires the manual for its own version.

Technical FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose a magnetic indicator instead of radar?

When local indication independent of power is needed and the liquid process is compatible with a chamber and float. Radar and a magnetic indicator can also be used together for redundant measurement.

KM26 or LMG200?

KM26 is the custom platform for severe conditions and a broad choice of materials/configurations; LMG200 is optimised for standard general-industry applications.

Can I add a 4–20 mA signal to a KM26?

Yes. A typical configuration uses an LMT200 outside the chamber, without direct process contact.

Can I add switches without stopping the plant?

Yes. LMS/MS magnetic switches are mounted externally, and their setpoints can be adjusted without changing the process piping.

Can a magnetic level gauge also measure an interface?

Yes, provided the float is designed for the fluid densities and the interface has sufficient ΔSG.

What can jam a magnetic level indicator?

Deposits, solids, crystallisation, extreme viscosity or a chamber not properly equalised with the vessel can impair float movement.
