ABB electromagnetic flowmeters

The first technology to consider for water and conductive liquids. Electromagnetic measurement detects velocity without moving parts in the pipe and, in full-bore meters, without a restrictive primary element.

ConductivityAn electromagnetic meter measures only electrically conductive liquids. Water and wastewater are ideal applications; hydrocarbons, oils, gases and steam are not. Minimum conductivity varies by platform and must be checked for the selected model.
Pressure lossA full-bore meter has no primary element restricting the flow passage. Additional pressure loss is generally negligible compared with DP technologies, making electromagnetic meters highly competitive for water lines.
When to use it

Excellent for water, and more

When we recommend it

  • Drinking water, industrial water and wastewater.
  • Slurries and liquids containing solids, provided the liner and electrodes are compatible.
  • Chemical processes with conductive liquids and suitable materials.
  • Food and pharmaceutical applications with hygienic connections.
  • Applications seeking to avoid permanent pressure loss.

When it is not the first choice

  • Gases, steam, oils and non-conductive hydrocarbons.
  • Pipes that may operate partially empty.
  • Applications with highly variable conductivity close to the operating limit.
  • Locations without suitable grounding or equipotential bonding.
  • Direct mass flow or density measurement: consider Coriolis.
Best practice

Installation errors that matter more than electronics

Keep the pipe fullAvoid high points where air can collect. In vertical lines, prefer upward flow where possible.
Electrodes and groundingDefine electrode orientation, grounding rings or electrodes, and equipotential bonding to suit the pipe material.
Pumps and valvesAvoid installing the sensor on a pump suction line or where cavitation and bubbles may pass through the measuring tube.
Actual velocityDo not automatically match the meter to the pipe diameter. A reduced size can improve low-flow measurement if pressure loss remains acceptable.
Liners and electrodesSelect PTFE, PFA, rubber and electrode materials for temperature, abrasion and corrosion, not just the nominal fluid.
Remote mountingUseful with vibration, immersion, poor accessibility or adverse ambient temperatures. Observe sensor cable limits and installation requirements.

Technical FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is an electromagnetic meter a good choice?

It is often the first choice for water, wastewater, sludge and conductive liquids: it is simple, has no moving parts and the full-bore sensor introduces no significant restriction.

What is the minimum conductivity?

It depends on the family. ProcessMaster platforms have different limits; for example, FEP630 supports lower values than FEP610. Check fluid conductivity against the selected model's datasheet.

WaterMaster or AquaMaster4?

WaterMaster is a robust water and wastewater meter for plants and networks. AquaMaster4 targets water networks, district metered areas, leak monitoring, revenue metering and remote sites, with battery power, logging, optional pressure measurement and cellular communication depending on version.

Can a water meter use battery or solar power?

Yes. This typically points towards AquaMaster4: ABB offers long-life batteries, renewable solar or wind power, or mains power depending on configuration.

When should electromagnetic meters be avoided?

For gases, steam, hydrocarbons and liquids with insufficient conductivity. Also avoid installations where a full pipe or suitable grounding and equipotential bonding cannot be ensured.

ProcessMaster FEP610 or FEP630?

FEP610 covers standard industrial applications. FEP630 offers broader performance, diagnostics, protocols, process temperature capability and options.

Can I replace a MagMaster, COPA-XE or older FEP/FEW?

Yes. A correct replacement requires the full code, nominal size, liner, electrodes, flanges, power supply, transmitter and certifications. The family name alone does not establish equivalence.
