For liquids, gases and especially steam. VortexMaster uses a widely established industrial technology. SwirlMaster uses ABB's proprietary Swirl technology and is particularly useful on skids without space for long straight runs.
A more comprehensive version with an integrated Pt100 as standard and flow computer functions for mass flow, energy flow and application-specific compensation.
ABB's proprietary Swirl technology is designed for liquids, gases and steam with very short straight-run requirements, making it suitable for skids and compact piping.
SteamVortex and Swirl are well suited to saturated and superheated steam, boilers, utilities and power generation circuits. Select nominal size for the actual range to keep Reynolds number and vortex frequency within their operating limits.
InstallationVortex typically needs longer straight runs. ABB SwirlMaster offers an advantage where space is limited: typically 3D upstream and 1D downstream. After a control valve, ABB specifies 5D upstream, and some geometries require different conditions.
When we recommend them
Saturated and superheated steam.
Process and utility gases.
Clean liquids with sufficient Reynolds number.
Swirl on skids, packaged units and compact piping.
Applications requiring technology without moving parts.
When to assess alternatives
Flow rates too low for the nominal size, potentially below the usable Reynolds number.
Two-phase flow, substantial condensation in gases or bubbles in liquids.
Liquids close to cavitation conditions.
Strong mechanical vibration near the measurement frequency.
Very accurate mass flow or density measurement: Coriolis may be more suitable.

What makes the difference in the field
Size for the flow rangeAn oversized Vortex meter loses low-flow sensitivity. Do not automatically select the existing pipe diameter.Check flow disturbancesElbows, valves, reducers and double bends cause swirl or distorted profiles. Follow the manual's straight-run requirements.Steam: avoid condensateSteam quality and pipe drainage must prevent condensate slugs that affect measurement.High temperatureManage electronics orientation and insulation to limit the ambient temperature around the transmitter.Liquids: prevent cavitationMaintain sufficient downstream pressure. Cavitation and flashing severely compromise measurement quality.CompensationFor gas or steam mass and energy flow, check whether external pressure and temperature measurements or integrated 450 functions are required.

Technical FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Vortex or Swirl?
Both measure liquids, gases and steam. Vortex is widely used for steam and utilities; ABB Swirl is particularly useful where available straight pipe length is limited.
How many straight pipe diameters does SwirlMaster require?
ABB typically specifies 3D upstream and 1D downstream. This is not universal: valves require more upstream length, and some disturbances need different conditions.
FSV430 or FSV450?
FSV430 is the standard volumetric-flow version. FSV450 adds advanced functions, temperature input and calculation or compensation capabilities useful for gases and steam.
FSS430 or FSS450?
The distinction is similar: FSS430 covers standard applications, while FSS450 offers more advanced flow computer and compensation functions.
Why are Vortex meters used for steam?
They have no moving parts and work well with saturated and superheated steam when sized for the actual range and suitable steam quality.
What are the most common mistakes?
Oversizing, ignoring straight runs or vibration, installing in two-phase or cavitating conditions, and overlooking density or compensation requirements.
How do you replace a Trio-Wirl?
Trio-Wirl VLM/SWM and FV4000/FV4111/FS4000/FS4111 families are assessed for replacement by VortexMaster or SwirlMaster after checking size, pressure, temperature, flanges and functions.
