ABB multivariable pressure transmitters

ABB multivariable transmitters

One transmitter can acquire differential pressure, absolute pressure and process temperature simultaneously. 266C models can also use these variables for dynamic flow and compensated-level calculations.

Three variables, one device

Differential pressure + absolute pressure + temperature

Differential and absolute pressure sensors are integrated into the transmitter. Process temperature is acquired through an external 4-wire Pt100.

Product selection

266C or 266J?

Accuracy is not the only difference: the transmitter's role within the system changes.

Variables supplied to an external system

266JSH / 266JST

Measure differential pressure, absolute pressure and temperature through an external RTD. The variables are then available to a PLC, DCS or flow computer for external calculations.

ModelDP accuracy
266JSH0.075%
266JST0.04%
Geyser IC practical guidance: Choose the 266C family for direct compensation and flow calculation in the transmitter. Choose 266J to acquire differential pressure, pressure and temperature while leaving calculations to the control system.
266C

A compact flow computer inside the transmitter

ΔPDifferential measurement across the primary element.
Absolute pressureCompensation for density and operating conditions.
Pt100 temperatureActual process temperature through an external RTD.
CalculationMass flow, standard volume, heat flow or compensated level.

Dynamic compensation

Beyond pressure and temperature, calculations can account for density, Reynolds number, discharge coefficient, compressibility and thermal expansion of the pipe and primary element.

Fewer field instruments

In many applications it replaces a DP transmitter, pressure transmitter, temperature transmitter and external calculator, reducing wiring and process penetrations.

Primary elements

DP flow with integrated compensation

ABB integrates equations for numerous standard primary elements and also supports non-standard configurations.

Temperature

External Pt100 up to 850 °C

RTD input

Process temperature is measured through an external 4-wire Pt100. ABB's datasheet specifies an input range of -200 to +850 °C.

Transmitter contribution

ABB specifies the accuracy contribution of the transmitter's Pt100 measuring section as ±0.3 K.

Integrated functions

Flow, totalisation and heat flow

Mass flowLiquids, gases, saturated steam and superheated steam.
Standard volumeNormalised volumetric flow for gases.
Heat flowEnergy calculation for water and steam.
TotaliserIntegrated totalisers and digital or pulse outputs depending on configuration.
Compensated level

Beyond flow: tank and steam drum level

Density compensation

When liquid density changes with temperature, 266C can use process temperature to correct conversion from differential pressure to level.

Steam drum level

The platform offers dedicated drum-level configurations, using pressure and temperature for more reliable compensation.

Technical FAQ

ABB 266 multivariable FAQ

What is the difference between ABB 266CST and 266JST?

266CST measures differential pressure, absolute pressure and temperature, using them to calculate mass flow, standard volume, heat flow or compensated level directly. 266JST measures these variables and makes them available to an external system.

What is the difference between 266CSH and 266CST?

The functions are the same, but the DP accuracy class differs: 266CSH has 0.075% basic accuracy, while 266CST reaches 0.04%.

What is the difference between 266JSH and 266JST?

Both measure differential pressure, absolute pressure and temperature through an external RTD. Basic accuracy is 0.075% for 266JSH and up to 0.04% for 266JST.

Does the multivariable transmitter measure process temperature?

Yes, through an external 4-wire Pt100. ABB specifies a Pt100 input range from -200 to +850 °C, with a transmitter contribution of ±0.3 K.

Can 266CST calculate mass flow directly?

Yes. Dynamic calculation uses differential pressure, absolute pressure and temperature, and can also compensate for density, Reynolds number, discharge coefficient and primary-element thermal expansion.

Which primary elements can be used with 266CST?

ABB provides equations for many DP elements, including orifices, nozzles, Venturi tubes, Pitot probes, wedge elements and configurable non-standard flow sensors.

Does 266CST have an integrated totaliser?

Yes. The platform supports totalisers and quantities such as mass flow, volume flow and heat flow, with digital or pulse outputs depending on configuration.

Can a multivariable transmitter measure level?

Yes. 266C models can be configured for density-compensated level and applications such as steam drum level.

What if remote seals are required?

266CRH/CRT and 266JRH/JRT are multivariable versions with remote diaphragm seals, covered on the dedicated Geyser diaphragm-seal transmitter page.
