Local indication and sensors

Thermometers and temperature sensors

From local mechanical readings to immersed electrical sensors. Selection depends on range, accuracy, response time, process, installation and signal-transmission requirements.

Supply: for mechanical thermometers, we work with manufacturers such as WIKA and Te.Ma Vasconi; for process sensors, we can also supply ABB SensyTemp TSP assemblies.
Local thermometers

Indication without a power supply

Bimetal thermometers

Bimetal thermometers

A robust, simple solution for local readings on pipes, tanks and machinery. No electrical supply, with a wide choice of dial sizes, connections and lengths.

Gas-filled thermometers

Gas-filled thermometers

Gas-filled systems also support remote capillaries, useful where the dial needs to be away from the measurement point or more accessible.

Electrical sensors

RTD/Pt100 or thermocouple?

RTD / Pt100

RTD / Pt100

Normally preferred where accuracy, stability and repeatability matter. Widely used in processes, utilities, food and pharmaceuticals, skids and machinery.

Available types include Pt100, Pt1000 and other resistance curves according to application.

Thermocouple

Thermocouple

Often preferred for higher temperatures, rapid response or greater robustness in demanding conditions.

Common types: J, K, T, N, E, R, S and B.

Maximum temperature alone is not enough: sheath, diameter, insulation, insertion depth, thermowell and response time can completely change sensor behaviour.

Installation

With or without a thermowell?

Without an integrated thermowellWhere a thermowell already exists or direct sensor installation is compatible with the process.
Fabricated protection tubeAn economical, modular solution for many industrial services.
Solid-machined thermowellFor more demanding mechanical conditions and stricter project specifications.
Non-invasiveIf pipe penetration is undesirable, consider ABB NINVA TSP341-N.

FAQ

Thermometer and sensor FAQ

When should I choose a bimetal thermometer?

For simple, robust local indication without power, with a response suitable for processes that are not extremely fast.

When is a gas-filled thermometer preferable?

For greater installation flexibility, a remote capillary or a faster response than many bimetal designs.

Pt100 or thermocouple?

Pt100 is normally preferred for accuracy, stability and repeatability. Thermocouples are often preferred for higher temperatures, rapid response or demanding conditions.

What is the difference between TSP111, TSP121 and TSP131?

TSP111 has no integrated thermowell, TSP121 has a welded protection tube, and TSP131 has a solid-machined thermowell.

Can sensors include an integrated transmitter?

Yes. SensyTemp assemblies can provide a direct sensor output or include 4–20 mA/HART, PROFIBUS PA or FOUNDATION Fieldbus transmitters, depending on configuration.
