Pneumatic controllers and transmitters

An established technology that remains useful and in demand. These instruments measure, transmit and control process variables without local electronics, using standard pneumatic signals.

JAA / JAF / JAG
Controllers

JAA / JAF / JAG

Pneumatic indicating controllers for pressure and temperature, with P, PI, PID or ON/OFF functions. Pneumatic signal: 20–100 kPa / 0.2–1 bar / 3–15 psi; nominal air supply: 1.4 bar.

Remote seals

NAE: pneumatic DP with remote seals

When the process fluid must not reach the measuring capsuleNAE uses two diaphragm seals and filled capillaries to transmit differential pressure to the pneumatic body. Useful for corrosive or viscous fluids and remote connections, with the same considerations as other remote seals: capillaries, temperature, zero elevation or suppression and symmetry.
When to use it / when to consider alternatives

Does a pneumatic architecture still make sense?

It makes sense for
  • a fully pneumatic installed base
  • established maintenance and spare-parts arrangements
  • independence from local electrical power
  • simple, well-understood functions
Consider modern electronics for
  • diagnostics and asset management
  • digital DCS integration and historical data
  • costly or problematic instrument air
  • reduced tubing and pneumatic leakage
Best practice

Instrument air and tubing are part of the measurement system

Clean, dry air

Water, oil and particles affect relays, nozzle/flapper mechanisms and restrictions. Filtration and regulation are essential.

Leak testing

Even a small leak in long tubing can affect zero, dynamics and air consumption.

Short tubing

Length and pneumatic volume introduce delay. Avoid unnecessary coils and undersized tubing.

Vertical mounting

Follow the model instructions, especially for DP transmitters and controllers with mechanical elements.

Zero / span / static alignment

On Deltapi N, perform elevation, suppression and static alignment according to the manual.

Controller tuning

Pneumatic P/PI/PID requires tuning matched to the process and valve. Excessive gain causes hunting.

Technical FAQ

Pneumatic instrumentation FAQ

Why still use a pneumatic controller?

To maintain a fully pneumatic installed base, avoid unnecessary electronic conversions or preserve an established plant approach that is easy to maintain locally.

What is the standard pneumatic signal?

ABB Campo/Deltapi families typically support 0.2–1 bar, 20–100 kPa or 3–15 psi. Check signal and air supply for the specific model.

Are JAA, JAF and JAG only indicators?

No. They are pneumatic indicating controllers with P, PI, PID or ON/OFF functions depending on configuration.

What do NAA/NAB/NAD measure?

They are Deltapi N pneumatic differential pressure transmitters for DP, level and flow. Different versions cover different ranges.

What is NAE used for?

NAE is a Deltapi N version with remote diaphragm seals, for applications where process fluid must not reach the measuring capsule directly.

What causes instability in a pneumatic loop?

Dirty or wet air, leaks, excessive tubing length, restrictions, dirty nozzle/flapper mechanisms, incorrect controller tuning or valve mechanics.
