DP primary elements, orifice plates and TORBAR

DP technology remains an industrial standard because it is simple, traceable and suitable for liquids, gases and steam. The complete measurement chain matters: primary element, impulse lines and manifold, and differential pressure transmitter.

ABB TORBAR
Averaging Pitot

ABB TORBAR

A multipoint probe that averages dynamic pressure. Particularly useful for large diameters, retrofits and applications requiring lower permanent pressure loss than an orifice plate.

Orifice / FPD175
Compact orifice

Orifice / FPD175

A compact primary element for liquids, gases and steam, which can be integrated with a manifold and DP or multivariable transmitter. A widely established solution, although permanent pressure loss must always be assessed.

Orifice flanges / orifice plateEconomical, standardised and easy to inspect. They introduce a permanent pressure loss related to the beta ratio and the differential pressure generated.
TORBAR / PitotPermanent pressure loss is very low, and weight and cost are often favourable at large diameters. Correct installation geometry and clean pressure ports are essential.

When we recommend them

  • EPC or customer specifications based on ISO/ASME standards and DP flow measurement.
  • Steam and gas in power generation and oil and gas.
  • Large diameters where Pitot or TORBAR offers an economic advantage.
  • Applications where DP transmitters are already a plant standard.
  • Applications requiring a simple primary element without electronics inside the pipe.

When to assess alternatives

  • When the energy cost of orifice pressure loss is high.
  • Very dirty fluids that can block impulse lines or pressure ports.
  • Very wide ranges: the Q∝√ΔP relationship limits the turndown of the measurement chain.
  • Insufficient straight runs with no option for flow conditioning.
  • Straightforward conductive water applications: an electromagnetic meter may be more direct.
AlignmentTORBAR probes and orifice plates must be oriented to the flow and installed in their specified positions.
Impulse linesSlopes, condensate, gas pockets and unequal lengths can introduce errors independent of transmitter accuracy.
ManifoldA correct isolation and equalisation sequence protects the DP cell during start-up and maintenance.
SteamUse suitable condensate pots and impulse lines to maintain stable hydrostatic columns and protect the transmitter from high temperatures.
SizingSelect differential pressure for sensitivity without wasting energy. The nominal operating point must not be the only criterion.
CompensationFor gases or steam with variable density, consider a 266C multivariable transmitter or external pressure and temperature measurements.

Technical FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Orifice or TORBAR?

Orifice plates are standardised and widely used, but cause greater permanent pressure loss. TORBAR is an averaging Pitot option for large diameters and applications requiring lower pressure loss.

How is an orifice plate sized?

Not from pipe diameter alone. Flow, pressure, temperature, density, viscosity, composition, beta ratio, the applicable standard and acceptable differential pressure or pressure loss are required.

Why does a Pitot probe have multiple holes?

TORBAR averages dynamic pressure at multiple points across the profile, reducing sensitivity to local velocity compared with a single-point measurement.

When should I use a multivariable transmitter?

For gases and steam requiring pressure and temperature compensation of mass flow, a multivariable transmitter can combine differential pressure, pressure, temperature and calculation.

What is the difference between 3-valve and 5-valve manifolds?

Both provide isolation and equalisation. A 5-valve manifold typically adds vent or test valves to simplify calibration and maintenance.

What is the most common Pitot installation error?

Incorrect alignment to the flow, incorrect insertion depth, insufficient straight runs or blocked sensing ports.
